School Hedge Planting

Hedges have many benefits; they are fantastic for wildlife, both as habitat, and corridors connecting habitats. Cross contour hedges help to slow the flow of storm water run-off and improve soil quality allowing water to penetrate. Hedgerows sequester carbon, both in themselves and in the soil beneath them.

For Dongria, working with children was at the core of Treesponsibility.

In her last year, Dongria was working on what she, in her way called The Hedge Fund – a pot of funding for hedgerows.

Dongria from Re-treeit training weekend

It was difficult to fund hedges and Dongria was not able to secure funding for hedges in the time she had left. It was her wish that we continue the quest.

I am delighted to say that we have been successful in gaining funding for this legacy project. The funders are:- Calderdale Flood Action Plan Priority Actions 80% funded by the Environment Agency, Community Foundation for Calderdale, and West Yorkshire Prepared.
