Midgelden Bank

 Midgelden Bank

Grid reference: SD 905 237

Site Description: Midgelden Bank is the site of the former Midgelden Pipeworks which has left a legacy of steep, eroding slopes consisting principally of worked shales. Treesponsibility planted Midgelden Bank Wood here over ten years ago, and in 2012/2013 has been installing living willow fascines and brash fascine revetments to stabilise the banks.

This tributary valley to the Calder is one of the more damaged landscapes and environments in the area. Just in this small valley are a landfill, a mine discharge and mine discharge treatment works (Coal Authority operated) as well as many eroding banks affecting water quality and sediment transport.
